Discover Floreana's Unusual Post Office
The Island of Floreana is one of just four inhabited islands in the Galapagos. In the 18th Century, homesick whalers stationed in the Galapagos came up with an inventive way of communicating with friends and family back home.
Letters were placed inside a simple wooden barrel for passing seamen to collect on homeward-bound ships and deliver by hand wherever they could. Floreana's Post Office has maintained the tradition. Today, visitors to Post Office Bay take care of thousands of letters via a simple act of kindness. If you find something bound for home, take it with you, and if possible, deliver it by hand!
